Working More Than One Job? Here's What You Need to Know
Every year we see the same thing. Social media fills with "tax hacks" promising bigger refunds. Unfortunately, many of these tips are simply incorrect and can lead to costly mistakes.
The ATO has confirmed it will again be closely reviewing tax returns this year, with particular attention on work-related expense claims and omitted income.
Before claiming a deduction, ask yourself three simple questions:
- Did I pay for it myself?
- Was it directly related to earning my income?
- Do I have a receipt or record to support the claim?
If the answer isn't "yes" to all three, it may not be deductible.
The ATO will also be checking that all income has been declared, including:
- interest from bank accounts;
- rental income;
- investment income;
- income from side businesses or contracting; and
- gig economy earnings.
With sophisticated data matching now in place, undeclared income is much easier for the ATO to identify.
The good news is there are also many legitimate deductions available that people often overlook. Knowing what applies to your occupation can make a real difference.
BWV Tip:
Don't rely on social media for tax advice. Every person's circumstances are different, and a quick conversation
with your Brentnalls Western Victoria advisor could help ensure you claim everything you're entitled to, without creating problems later.
