Don't Rush Your Tax Return This Tax Time
With the new financial year underway, it can be tempting to lodge your tax return as soon as possible, particularly if you're hoping for an early refund. However, waiting a few extra weeks could save you time, reduce the risk of errors and help ensure you receive the correct outcome.
Each July, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) progressively receives information from employers, banks, government agencies and health funds. While some information is available from 1 July, much of the data isn't finalised until later in the month.
By waiting until late July, most of your income information should already be pre-filled into your tax return, making it easier to prepare an accurate return and reducing the likelihood of amendments later.
While you're waiting, it's a great opportunity to:
- Gather receipts for work-related expenses and donations.
- Ensure your logbooks and records are up to date.
- Check your bank account and contact details with the ATO.
- Review your private health insurance information.
- Consider whether there are any deductions or offsets you may be entitled to claim.
Remember, pre-filled information is a helpful starting point, but it's still important to review everything carefully to ensure it's complete and accurate.
BWV Tip:
A little patience at tax time can often result in a faster, smoother refund and fewer headaches later.
